Baltimore Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde on Tuesday was named the 2023 American League Manager of the Year.

Hyde becomes the fourth Orioles manager to win the honor since its inception in 1983. The other managers to win the award with Baltimore were Buck Showalter in 2014, Davey Johnson in 1997 and Frank Robinson in 1989.

Entering the season, the Orioles were projected to finish under .500 despite going 83-79 in 2022. Not only did Baltimore end the season with a winning record, they finished with the best record in the American League at 101-61.

The other American League managers in consideration were Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers and Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hyde received 27 of 30 first place votes. The other three went to Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy.

Since Hyde took over as the Orioles manager in December 2018, Baltimore has a record of 315-393. The team also made the postseason in 2023.

This isn’t the first honor for a member of the Orioles this year. Infielder Gunnar Henderson was named the American League Rookie of the Year and both him and catcher Adley Rutschman were named American League Silver Sluggers.
