Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson on Monday was unanimously voted the 2023 American League Rookie of the Year.

Henderson, 22, becomes the seventh Oriole to win the honor since its inception in 1947. The other rookies to win the award with Baltimore were right-handed pitcher Gregg Olson in 1989, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. in 1982, first baseman Eddie Murray in 1977, outfielder Al Bumbry in 1973, outfielder Curt Blefary in 1965 and shortstop Ron Hansen in 1960.

Through 150 games played in 2023, Henderson had a .255 batting average with 28 home runs and 82 runs batted in. He led American League rookies in runs (100), runs batted in, total bases (274), triples (9) and extra bases (66).

The other American League rookies in consideration were Tanner Bibee of the Cleveland Guardians and Triston Casas of the Boston Red Sox.

This isn’t the first honor for Henderson this year. The rookie was also named an American League Silver Slugger and the team’s 2023 Most Valuable Oriole.

Henderson was called up by the Orioles on Aug. 31, 2022.
