Record-cold temperatures were broken Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs AFC Wild Card game against the Miami Dolphins.

Actual temperatures at kickoff were minus-4 degrees, making this matchup the coldest game in franchise history. In addition, it’s the fourth-coldest game in NFL history by temperature and the third-coldest by wind chill.

So, what exactly does that look like in person?

A water bottle inside a cooler at Arrowhead freezes the moment it’s taken out of the refrigerator.

At field level, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s mustache froze over during the first half of the game.

Back at field level, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ helmet shattered as he ran for a 13-yard gain in the third quarter. He made contact with Dolphins’ safety DeShon Elliott and a part of his helmet snapped off as a result of the hit.

Rarely do helmets fail in such a manner. But then again, rarely is it below zero at kickoff of a football game.

Mahomes ran two more plays before officials made him get a backup helmet from the sideline. He threw another incomplete pass and Kansas City kicked a field goal on fourth down to take a 19-7 lead, and Mahomes spent the ensuing Miami possession fiddling with the replacement helmet on the sideline in an effort to make it comfortable.
