Baltimore Orioles rookie infielder Gunnar Henderson was named the team’s “Most Valuable Oriole” for the 2023 season.

Henderson, 22, becomes the fourth rookie to be named the winner of the award since its inception in 1954. Other rookies to win the award were right-handed pitchers Gregg Olson in 1989, Rodrigo Lopez in 2002, and catcher Adley Rutschman in 2022.

Through 148 games played, Henderson has a .257 batting average with 28 home runs and 82 runs batted in. He leads American League rookies in runs (99), runs batted in, total bases (272), triples (9), and game-winning RBIs (10).

The Most Valuable Oriole Award is named in honor of the late Lou Hatter, a former sportswriter for The Baltimore Sun who covered the Orioles for 27 years.

Henderson will be honored at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Saturday ahead of a matchup with the Boston Red Sox.
